Lam Fung, born in 1967, lives in Austria and China. He was a close disciple of modern ink painting master Tang Yun 唐云 and Zhao Shao Ang 赵少昂. Upon graduating from high school in Hong Kong in 1986, he entered the prestigious National Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts now the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and participated in the contemporary ink painting movement.
After graduating in 1990, he was invited by Austrian Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna to join the Master Class for Painting and Printmaking under Prof. Maximilian Melcher then Chancellor of the Academy where he studied European traditions under renowned artists including Arnulf Rainer. In 1993, he was awarded Master of Fine Arts with First-Class Honours by the Austrian Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna.
Lam has worked in Austria, Australia, China, Singapore and the United States; and taught fine arts and digital media at tertiary level. Lam has extensive experience in cross-media practices. He draws his aesthetic approach in art from his transcontinental experiences and finds inspiration from history and memories, contemporary events, myth and ritual. His works are found in the permanent collections of the Albertina Museum, the Austrian Ministry for Art and Science and the Vienna City Government. The Monaco royal family also collects his works.
In March 2014, Lam Fung held a solo exhibition “Index of Nature” in Shanghai. His paintings reflect his intellectual concepts, which are a unique combination of Chinese and Austrian philosophies. Lam Fung is imbued with the richness of Austrian and Chinese philosophies and the art forms, which influenced him in Vienna and Zhejiang. He is both a philosopher and an artist.
Lam Fung is also the founder of Ink Forum and his works are being currently featured in the "In Sequence" Exhibition, along with other leading Chinese artists, held at the Zhejiang Museum in Hangzhou from 6 - 15 June 2014.
